Credit card scams cost thousands of businesses in Texarkana

TEXARKANA, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) – The Texarkana Police Department is warning businesses about potential credit card scams after several stores in the area were affected this week.

Police say there have been three incidents in the past few days where people used fake credit cards to make large purchases. They say scammers use blank credit cards to trick tellers into thinking the transaction is being executed as credit, even though the back of the card has instructions to execute it as cash.

Authorities say the three affected businesses suffered a combined product loss of $10,000. These scammers buy high-priced electronic devices and gift cards. Police say there may be other businesses affected by this that they are not yet aware of.

Agent Shawn Vaughn urges business owners to educate their employees about the types of scams that can occur. If you see something, don’t be afraid to ask for help.

“If they got something wrong, or something, or somebody going through it, get somebody over there and look at it and have two sets of eyes doing it because usually this is going to be enough to put a stop there.
