Buying miles and points strategically can be great value, especially for luxury travel. The Etihad Guest program just launched its latest promotion on purchased miles, and it’s the best deal we’ve seen from the program this year.

Until Monday, November 22, 2021, Etihad Guest is offering up to 70% bonus on miles purchased. The bonus is staggered, as follows:

  • Buy 4000-14000 miles, get 40% bonus
  • Buy 15,000-30,000 miles, get 50% bonus
  • Buy 31,000 to 100,000 miles, get 70% bonus

How much does the purchase of Etihad Guest miles cost?

Etihad Guest typically charges 2.0 cents per mile purchased, and there are no other taxes or fees. It is above all bonus or discount. With the 70% bonus, if you hit the max of this promotion, you would receive a total of 170,000 Etihad Guest miles at a cost of $ 2,000, which is a rate of 1.18 cents per mile Etihad Guest.

This is the best promotion we’ve seen on Etihad Guest miles purchased so far this year. Being able to buy Etihad Guest miles for 1.18 cents each is potentially a steal.

How many Etihad Guest miles can you purchase?

Etihad Guest limits members to purchasing 100,000 Etihad Guest miles per account per calendar year, before any bonuses. The exception is Etihad Guest Platinum members, who can purchase up to 150,000 miles per year, before any bonus.

If you buy Etihad Guest miles it can take up to 72 hours for them to post to your account, but they usually post much faster than that.

Which credit card can I buy Etihad Guest miles with?

Etihad Guest mile purchases are processed by points.com, which means they do not count as an airline ticket purchase for credit card spending. Therefore, I recommend that you use a card on which you are trying to achieve minimum spending, or if not, a credit card that maximizes your return on your daily spending.

In this case, the best option is the Capital One Venture Rewards (exam) credit card, which offers 2x miles and has no overseas transaction fees. Usually the Chase Freedom Unlimited® (exam) or the Citi® Double Cash Card (exam) would also be good options for maximizing daily spending, but the cards have overseas transaction fees, so that wouldn’t be a good option. good option in this case.

Is the purchase of Etihad Guest miles worth it?

While I wouldn’t speculatively buy Etihad Guest miles, there are some great niche exchanges with Etihad where that price might be worth it. For example:

Royal Air Maroc business class 787-9

How much are Etihad Guest miles worth?

Everyone will value mile currencies differently, but personally I value Etihad Guest miles at around 1.2 cents each. I tend to rate points quite conservatively, and there are plenty of ways to get more Etihad Guest miles worth than that.

Do Etihad Guest miles expire?

Etihad Guest miles do not expire until you have at least one activity on your account once every 18 months. Earning or spending miles (including purchasing them) would reset the expiration date of your miles.

What other ways can you earn Etihad Guest miles?

The cost of purchasing Etihad Guest miles here is really attractive, although I note that there are many other ways to earn those miles. For those who have credit cards in the US, Etihad Guest is a transfer partner with Amex Membership Rewards, Capital One, and Citi ThankYou, so these are great alternatives for earning Etihad Guest miles.

However, at such a low cost, some people may prefer to simply purchase miles rather than transfer them.

Transfer points to Etihad Guest with these cards:

American Express® Gold Card

  • 4x points in restaurants

  • 4x points in US supermarkets, up to $ 25,000 in purchases per year

  • 3x points on flights booked directly with airlines or via amextravel.com

  • $ 250

American Express® Business Gold Card

  • Earn 4 times more Membership Rewards points on airline tickets purchased directly from airlines

  • Access to Amex offers

  • Redeem Amex points for airline tickets

  • $ 295

The American Express Platinum Card®

The American Express Business Platinum Card®

  • Earn 1.5x on purchases of $ 5,000 or more in a single transaction up to $ 2 million per calendar year

  • Redeem points for over 1.5 cents each for a plane ticket

  • Access to the Amex Centurion lounge

  • $ 595 ($ 695 if the request is received on or after 01/13/2022)

At the end of the line

Etihad Guest sells miles with a 70% bonus, which translates to a cost of 1.18 cents per mile. This could be a good deal for premium cabin trades. However, I would recommend buying only miles with a specific use in mind, as miles depreciate over time.
